Anniversary of Hurricane Andrew Marked

posted by Alan McBride -

The year 1992 saw a relatively quiet hurricane season in the Atlantic.

There were only six named storms for the entire season, and the first of those didn't take shape until August.

The name of that storm was Andrew.

August 24, 1992, Andrew made landfall over the south Florida coast, a Category 5 hurricane that swept across the lower peninsula at blistering speed.

Authorities estimate that the storm was responsible for 40 deaths and the destruction of 25,000 homes.

An additional 100,000 homes and other structures were damaged.

Andrew remains the most destructive hurricane ever to hit the state of Florida.

After the 1992 season,m the name Andrew was retired from the list of names for Atlantic hurricanes, never to be used again.
