Rick Scott Will Not Act on Confederate Monument

posted by Rick Flagg -

Governor Rick Scott says he won't order the removal of a confederate monument from the grounds of the Florida Capitol, because that's a job for the legislature.

The governor also has no plans to call the legislature into special session to deal with the issue, because it can wait till next year.

Scott says there's a process and he won't interfere.

"Some things remain done locally, some things are done at the state level, some things are done at the federal level," he said. "And we need to allow that process to work, we need to allow everybody to engage in that process."

The governor is in charge of two state agencies that deal with historic monuments and the capitol grounds, so legal experts say Scott could get rid of that confederate marker if he really wanted to.

Scott, however, appears satisfied to let lawmakers hash out the issue.
