Freedom Comes with Responsibility

Milo Yiannopoulus held a press conference yesterday announcing he is resigning from Breitbart and he apologized for comments that made it seem like he endorses pedophilia. Watching this got me thinking about a few things, some things I did not expect to think about.

To begin I will say this (and I'm not an expert on this so take it with a grain of salt) but I have to say Milo's approach makes more sense to me. I was recently watching him on Bill Maher's show and thinking to myself "there's something off about him beyond just being provocative, he seems to have some mental disability or psychological problems." Now that I hear he has been abused it makes more sense. His provocations are really a type of defense mechanism I think. He even admits that his humor and rudeness is how he chooses to deal with his issues. So instead of letting it destroy him he ALWAYS punches back, not really caring how it affects others' feelings. If he has to think about someone else's feelings, then he might have to address his own, and he doesn't want to do that.

The other thing he said that really got my attention was he claims that he says all these hurtful, provocative, and rude things in an attempt to fight for free speech. This can be counterproductive in my opinion. While I tend to be libertarian in my views that the government should not be involved in regulating speech, I do believe individuals in a civil society have a responsibility to think before they speak, and sometimes control what they say. Milo makes it seem like words are always innocent. I disagree, words MATTER. I don't want to live in a world where we say whatever whenever because we think that's freedom. I'm sorry but that's chaos. I'm not saying we should avoid the truth, we should be bold in saying things that are truthful and need to be said, BUT we should not throw out compassion, empathy, and love for others in the process.

Finally, all of you, be like-minded, be sympathetic, love one another,be compassionate and humble. Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult. On the contrary, repay evil with blessing, because to this you were called so that you may inherit a blessing. For,

“Whoever would love life  and see good days must keep their tongue from evil  and their lips from deceitful speech. They must turn from evil and do good; they must seek peace and pursue it. For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous    and his ears are attentive to their prayer, but the face of the Lord is against those who do evil.” - 1 Peter 3: 8-12
