Police: Winter Park Shooter in Custody

Students at the Winter Park campus of Rollins College spent much of their afternoon Monday sheltering in place Monday, until a precautionary lock down was lifted, according to local authorities.

The lock down ended a few hours before police reported catching the suspect.

According to Winter Park police, the shooting happened Monday in the 900 block of Orange Avenue.

Police said they were called to the scene when someone reported a shoplifting incident at a local Goodwill.

Police reports indicated that officers searched for the suspect, identified as Jerad Christopher Vasquez, 19, who had allegedly fired on a person who had attempted to stop him from shoplifting.

Police said the person was wounded but is expected to survive.

Investigators said they found Vasquez Monday night hiding under a trailer near the scene of the shooting.

Authorities say Vasquez fired on a Winter Park Police Officer, but the officer was not injured.

Police said after the capture of Vasquez, he was booked into the Orange County Jail on multiple charges.
