Gillum Wants Governor To Suspend Stand Your Ground

One of the Democrats who wants to replace Governor Rick Scott is calling on him to declare a state of emergency and suspend the "Stand Your Ground" self-defense law.

Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum says Florida needs to do something because people are literally getting away with murder.

"Stand Your Ground as it exists in this state has created the opportunity for people to take into their own hands a decision to be judge, jury, and executioner," he said.

Gillum says the law was supposed to be all about self-defense, but has morphed into a thing that is turning more people into armed vigilantes.

Members of the black caucus in the Florida Legislature are also targeting Stand Your Ground, saying they'll propose some common sense changes in the law during next year's legislative session.

Florida passed Stand Your Ground in 2005.

Other states have since followed, and now more than 30 other states have some form of this law.
