Two People Injured in Volusia County Plane Crash

Authorities in Volusia County say two Port Orange men were injured Thursday when their small plane crashed at Spruce Creek Fly-In.

Deputies say the crash happened early in the afternoon.

According to incident accounts, witnesses saw the plane go down and catch fire.One of the witnesses reportedly called 911, while others worked to get the plane's occupants free.

Authorities say the pilot, identified as 61-year-old John Wilson, was flown to Orlando Regional Medical Center, where he was listed in critical condition.

Deputies say the passenger, identified as Matthew Simmons, was taken to a hospital in Volusia County where he was being treated for injuries that were not life-threatening.

According to local authorities, the national Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration had been informed of the crash and would most likely be taking the lead in the investigation.
