Trump, Kim Arrive in Singapore for Historic Summit

President Trump arrives in Singapore ahead of historic summit with Kim jong un

President Donald Trump and Kim Jong un have both arrived in Singapore ahead of a planned historic summit on Tuesday.

Air Force One touched down Sunday evening at a military base after Kim had arrived, according to the AP. CNN reports that Kim arrived on an Air China flight in what has been his fourth trip abroad since taking power in 2011.

Ahead of his trip, Trump tweeted that he was looking forward to meeting Kim and that one-time opportunity would not be wasted.

I am on my way to Singapore where we have a chance to achieve a truly wonderful result for North Korea and the World. It will certainly be an exciting day and I know that Kim Jong-un will work very hard to do something that has rarely been done before Create peace and great prosperity for his land. I look forward to meeting him and have a feeling that this one-time opportunity will not be wasted!"

The road to Tuesday's summit was not always guaranteed. Trump initially cancelled the meeting two weeks ago citing statements from North Korea that were filled with "tremendous anger and open hostility."

A week later, the White house confirmed the summit was back on for June 12 in Singapore. Trump has said he plans on pushing for a denuclearization of the Korean peninsula and could pursue a peace treaty that would officially end the Korean War, which only stopped after an armistice that was signed in 1953.

At a news conference on Thursday, President Trump predicted success for his upcoming meeting with Kim.

"We’re going to have a great success,’ President Trump at the White House Thursday. "A long time ago, this could have been solved in a lot easier manner and a lot less dangerous manner. But it wasn’t. So I’ll solve it, and we’ll get it done."
