Florida Researchers Tackling Military Suicides

posted by Rick Flagg -

The Department of Defense is funding research at Florida State University that should make it easier for doctors to spot a potential suicide.

FSU Psychology professor Jessica Ribeiro says they're using artificial intelligence to search computerized medical records for more than 700 different variables.

"We developed machine learning algorithms that could accurately predict suicide attempts and deaths and translate those into a tool for primary care providers in the military," she said.

Ribeiro says the program can predict with 80-to-90 percent accuracy whether someone will attempt suicide as much as two years into the future.

The current accuracy rate is only about 50 percent.

Suicide is now a major concern for the armed forces.

It used to be fairly rare, but Ribeiro says there's been a spike among active duty military and veterans over the past 15 years.
