Gun Control Bill Signed By Florida Governor

Florida Governor Rick Scott signed a bipartisan gun control bill in Tallahassee on Friday afternoon. The bipartisan bill raises the age for buying guns from 18 to 21.  It includes a three-day waiting period for any gun purchases and allows specially-trained teachers and school staff to be armed.

The Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Public Safety Act will allow police to seize guns from people who are deemed mentally ill and will include funding to make schools more secure.

The bill was opposed by the National Rifle Association. The organization said the legislature gave into "a display of bullying and coercion" to create a bill that infringes on the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding citizens.

Democrats were not pleased with the compromise bill because it didn't give them everything they had asked for.

"They marched, protested, and started a movement - but this isn’t the legislation the students of Parkland so bravely fought for," Florida Democratic Party Chair Terrie Rizzo said in a statement. "It doesn’t include key components like expanding universal background checks, an assault weapons ban, and it doesn’t even accomplish what Scott himself said he would do."
