Florida Pastors Oppose Payday Lending Bills

Ministers in Florida say payday loans are shearing their flocks, and they're asking the legislature not to make things any worse.

Payday lenders are pushing bills that allow them to make larger loans at higher interest rates and Elder Wayne Wright of Jacksonville says that's a deal with the devil.

"It is just a treacherous trap and a juggling act," he said. "You're not borrowing from Peter to pay Paul, you're borrowing from the devil to pay the devil."

Fifty-four pastors, ministers and faith leaders have signed an open letter to state lawmakers asking them not to expand payday loans.

They are also calling on lawmakers to crack down on predatory lenders.
