Concerns about Educational Readiness

Colleges often complain that high school students aren't ready for higher education, but the problem apparently starts way before that.

State Representative Loranne Ausley of Tallahassee says the sad truth is that many of the kids entering Kindergarten are not prepared.

"Today we know that twenty-five percent of the kids in Florida are showing up to kindergarten without the basic skills to succeed," she said. "And this number is almost doubled for kids in poverty."

Ausley is sponsoring a bill that requires the 300 elementary schools with the lowest performance to create early learning transition teams.

She says that will help the kids get up to speed and improve the overall performance of the schools.
