Protecting LGBT Employees

A bill to protect gays and lesbians from discrimination in the workplace has plenty of support in the Florida Legislature... but it still can't get a hearing.

A dozen Republicans have joined with Democrats in the Florida Legislature to support a bill banning discrimination against gays and lesbians in the workplace.

Representative Rene Plasencia of Orlando says equality is not a partisan issue.

"It is truly a bi-partisan effort," she said. "It's long overdue, we need to get it done. I'm proud to be a member of a body that understands that and that fights for everyone's equal rights."

The bill  has the support of major employers like Disney, Darden, Marriot and CSX.

They say it will improve Florida's image in the corporate world.

Nearly 40 percent of lawmakers in the Florida Legislature have signed on as co-sponsors of the anti-discrimination bill, but it's stalled because they haven't been able to get a hearing in committee.
