Trump Declares Opioid Epidemic Is A National Public Health Emergency

The deadly opioid epidemic is a national public health emergency.  President Trump made that declaration in a speech at the White House.  He called it the worst drug problem in world history.  Trump noted that addiction to painkillers is ripping apart communities and families across the U.S.  He said the federal government will be fighting the opioid epidemic on multiple fronts.

Trump argued that the resolve of the entire nation is needed to combat the epidemic.  It is estimated that opioid abuse killed 64-thousand Americans last year.  The President called it a national shame and a human tragedy.  He said the government will go after companies and individuals who seek to profit by taking advantage of the epidemic.  Trump also noted that government health officials are working to develop non-addictive painkillers.
