Texting Bill Clears Fla. Senate Hurdle

A state senate committee in Tallahassee has approved a bill to crack down on people who text while they drive.

The sponsor of the measure, Senator Keith Perry of Gainesville, is not a fan of government regulation.

But he says this is different.

"I'm a guy who looks at government as overbearing and over-regulated, but this is a public safety issue," he said. "It's a monumental task, but we're gonna work on it. I believe we can get something done."

Under current Florida law, texting while driving is classified as secondary enforcement, which means you can't get a ticket unless you're pulled over for a separate violation.

Perry's bill says police don't need that pretext to stop you and issue a citation.
