Resegregation at Florida Schools

Despite having one of the most diverse populations in the country, a new report from Florida State University says schools in the Sunshine State are becoming more segregated.

Doctor Carol Weissert says blacks and Hispanics are clustered in schools with few white or Asian students and there aren't many minorities in the white schools.

"We're certainly not totally black schools and totally white schools," she said, "But we are trending in that direction, and I think we have to ask ourselves is this something we want."

It's more than just race. Weissert says re-segregation is also about poverty.

The study says blacks and Hispanics are concentrated in schools where most of the students come from low income families and have fewer resources.

The study was commissioned by the LeRoy Collins Institute at Florida State University.

Governor Collins led the charge for desegregation in Florida and that pretty much ended his political career.
