President Donald Trump said on Thursday that he is working on a deal with lawmakers to get “massive border controls” in exchange for measures to address young illegal immigrants living in the United States.
“We’re working on a plan for DACA,” the president said before leaving on Air Force One for Florida.
However, Trump also revealed that he would not seek funding for the border wall as part of the deal.
“The wall will come later,” he added. “We’re right now renovating large sections of the wall, massive sections, making it brand new. [...] The wall is going to be built. It will be funded a little bit later.”
There were conflicting reports on Thursday on whether Trump had already struck a deal with Democrats after House Minority Leaders Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi dined with the president.
But Trump made it clear that no deal was finalized:
No deal was made last night on DACA. Massive border security would have to be agreed to in exchange for consent. Would be subject to vote.— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) September 14, 2017
