Dakota Meyer Says Politics and Rules of Engagement Killed His Team

INJOMarine sergeant and Medal of Honor recipient, Dakota Meyer, said during an interview the reason why he lost members of his team in Afghanistan was because of politics and the restrictive rules of engagement.

Speaking with “Fox & Friends,” Meyer's comments came after President Trump announced his administration's plan for dealing with the more than decade-long war in Afghanistan:

“Look, I think he said what we've all been asking for a long time. I mean, when we were over there we wanted to do our job, what we wanted to do was kill terrorists. Not build a better place for them to take over, like we've done for a long time.”

“I think if the president is going to do this and he is going to make this commitment to send troops back over to Afghanistan...he has to hold that commitment, to let them do their jobs. Let them do their jobs and let them run the show and let them take out the terrorists,” he added.

When asked if he felt the pressure of politics on the ground, Myer took it a step further by saying politics is a major reason why his members of his squad were killed: “I lost my whole team due to politics. Yeah, of course, I did.”

“Rules of engagement,” Myer continued. “What kind of sense does it make — you think some commander makes sense of — 'Hey, we can’t drop artillery around a village because we are worried about collateral damage?' That’s not coming from guys on the ground doing the fighting. So, I mean, I would say that’s a direct cause of loss of life over in Afghanistan for sure, especially in my case.”
